Rinse grew out of Rinse FM, the London community radio station that helped bring grime and dubstep from pirate broadcasts to a wider audience. Founded in 1994, Rinse FM operated without a licence until June 2010, when it received a community FM broadcast licence for young people living and working across central, east and south London.

The station's musical identity has always been rooted in UK dance music: garage, grime, dubstep, house, jungle and UK funky all sit within its broadcast tradition. Before becoming licensed, Rinse FM was described as London's biggest pirate radio station. It gave early exposure to grime artists Dizzee Rascal and Wiley, while dubstep DJs including Skream, Kode9 and DJ Oneman found a regular home on its airwaves. DJ Geeneus leads the station.

As the station's label, Rinse carries that same club-facing London sensibility into releases. Its roster includes Katy B, whose work reflects the overlap between UK pop and underground dance culture, alongside artists such as Mozey, Vigro Deep, Anthony Hemsey, OKO UK, Braga Circuit and James Hiraeth. The label remains tied to Rinse FM's long-running role as a broadcaster for the sounds and DJs emerging from the UK's dance-music communities.
