Deep House Artists

Deep house usually moves at 118 to 125 BPM, using house’s four-to-the-floor kick drum as a steady base for jazz-funk chords, soul-derived vocal touches and roomy synthesizer arrangements. Its groove is often less abrupt than techno and less peak-time focused than much EDM: basslines roll, hi-hats shuffle, and chords are allowed to linger between drum hits.

The style emerged in the 1980s from Chicago house, drawing particular warmth from the electric-piano harmonies and smoother rhythmic feel of jazz-funk. Larry Heard, recording as Mr. Fingers, is closely associated with its early development. His work pointed toward a form of house where melody, harmony and atmosphere carry as much weight as the beat.

Compared with tech house, deep house generally leaves more room for chord progression and soulful colour rather than stripped-back percussion. It can overlap with melodic house in its emphasis on tuneful synth work, but its pulse remains rooted in house rhythm and its mood tends toward understated flow over dramatic build-and-drop structure. The result is dance music built for sustained movement, with detail in the bass, keys and percussion rewarding close listening.
