Kompakt

Kompakt is an independent electronic music label from Cologne, Germany, closely associated with microhouse and minimal techno and widely recognized for its long-running Total compilation series. Alongside its label activity, it operates as a vinyl and CD distributor, reflecting its roots in record retail and its continued connection to physical formats.

The label was created in 1998 when the Delirium record shop in Cologne, founded in 1993, was renamed. Kompakt remains tied to a record store and also runs a webshop. Ownership is credited to Wolfgang Voigt, Michael Mayer, and Jürgen Paape, a trio whose work as producers and DJs aligns with the label’s focus on tightly produced, club-oriented electronic music and the minimal, detail-driven aesthetics associated with the Cologne scene.

Kompakt’s catalogue is commonly framed around microhouse and minimal techno, styles that emphasize subtle rhythmic shifts, restrained arrangements, and a precise approach to sound design. The Total compilation series has served as a public-facing statement of that identity, presenting a curated view of the label’s sound and its surrounding network of artists.
