Canadian DJ and producer of progressive house, minimal trance, and techno, born January 5, 1981, Joel Zimmerman grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Initially releasing music in 2000 under the name Karma K, he took on the alias Deadmau5 in 2005. He launched the label Mau5trap Recordings in 2007. The name Deadmau5 (pronounced "dead mouse") was inspired by an incident involving a mouse found in Zimmerman's computer; "Dead Mouse" was too lengthy for a website login, leading to its abbreviation to "deadmau5".
