DIRTYBIRD
Dirtybird Records built its identity around what founder Claude VonStroke, also known as Barclay Crenshaw, called “tech funk”: a loose, playful strain of house music made for dance floors without taking itself too seriously. Founded in January 2005, the independent label emerged from San Francisco and has also operated from Los Angeles.
The label's catalog is rooted in party music, aimed at dancers looking for a more laid-back atmosphere than straight-ahead club functionalism. Its roster has included artists such as Lubelski, Sacha Robotti, Walker & Royce, Mike Kerrigan, Cour T., n808, Shaded and Black V Neck, reflecting Dirtybird’s focus on house music with personality, bounce and a sense of mischief.
Dirtybird received Underground Label of the Year at the International Dance Music Awards during Winter Music Conference for 2013, presented in 2014, and again for 2014, presented in 2015. The awards recognised a label that had turned VonStroke’s tech-funk idea into a distinct home for dance music built around relaxed crowds, offbeat energy and the communal pull of a party.
