Shadow Child
Simon Christopher Bird, born 20 January 1977 in Portsmouth, is an English producer and DJ best known as Shadow Child and Dave Spoon. He has also worked under the name Simon Neale, alongside aliases including Child, Shadowchild, Revivalist and Polymod.
Bird’s work spans house-rooted electronic music, with releases connected to UK garage, bassline, breakbeat, drum and bass, techno and related club styles. As Shadow Child, he has become the name most closely associated with his later output, while Dave Spoon remains a key earlier alias.
Beyond his solo work, Bird is a member of Lovequest with Doorly and Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears. He also forms MASC with Mark Archer, the Altern 8 musician.
Radio has been another major part of Bird’s work. He was previously included in BBC Radio 1’s In New DJs We Trust line-up and spent nine years on Rinse FM. From 2022, he became a resident on the relaunched Kool FM, presenting the DNA radio show.
