Acid House Artists

Acid house adds the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer-sequencer to house music’s rhythmic frame, turning the bassline into a sharp, elastic lead voice. Its sound centres on repeating electronic sequences that bubble, rasp and bend across the beat, giving tracks a more abrasive, mechanical edge than house styles built around smoother grooves or deeper atmospheres. The result can feel lean and hypnotic, with the changing texture of the bass pattern carrying as much weight as the drums.

The style developed in Chicago around the mid-1980s, where DJs shaped its early form. Phuture and Sleezy D are associated with the TB-303-driven approach around 1986. Acid house later became part of the UK’s acid house and rave culture, while its sound fed into later electronic forms including techno, trance, hardcore, jungle, big beat and trip hop. Acid techno takes the same acidic electronic vocabulary into a more techno-oriented setting, while acid house remains rooted in house’s dancefloor pulse.
