Richard “Richie” Hawtin (real name Richard Michael Hawtin) is a British-Canadian electronic musician and DJ closely associated with Detroit techno’s second wave in the early 1990s and with the rise of minimal techno from the mid-1990s onward. He is widely known for work released under a large number of aliases, most prominently Plastikman and F.U.S.E., which he has used to separate different strands of his production and DJ identity.

Hawtin became involved with Detroit techno at a time when the style was expanding beyond its first generation of artists, and his early profile was shaped by both his DJ activity and his studio output. He gained particular recognition through recordings issued as Plastikman and F.U.S.E. The F.U.S.E. project produced his debut album, Dimension Intrusion (1993), released as part of Warp Records’ Artificial Intelligence series, a context that placed his work alongside other electronic music framed for listening as well as club play.

From the mid-1990s, Hawtin has been identified as a leading exponent of minimal techno, a direction that aligned with his interest in pared-back rhythmic structures and a more abstract approach to dance music. His Plastikman material is often associated with minimal and acid-inflected techno, and the alias became his best-known name for releases exploring that territory. Alongside these principal projects, he has also released music under numerous other monikers, including Circuit Breaker, Concept 1, and others, reflecting a long-running practice of issuing tracks and recordings under different identities.

Hawtin has also been active as a label founder and manager. He founded the techno labels Plus 8 Records, M_nus, and Probe Records, using them as platforms for his own releases and for music aligned with the scenes and sounds he has been part of. In addition to his recording and label work, he has been involved with DJ technology, including development work connected to the Final Scratch digital DJ system, and he has been noted for adopting new tools as they became available.

Born in Britain and associated with Canada, Hawtin’s background is often described as British-Canadian, and he is linked in particular to the North American techno network that formed around Detroit and its wider regional orbit. He is the brother of Matthew Hawtin.
