Richie Hawtin
Richie Hawtin is a British-Canadian electronic musician and DJ whose work under the Plastikman and F.U.S.E. aliases helped define his early profile in techno. Born Richard Michael Hawtin on June 4, 1970, he became involved with Detroit techno's second wave in the early 1990s and has been a leading exponent of minimal techno since the mid-1990s.
His first album arrived as F.U.S.E.: Dimension Intrusion was released in 1993 as part of Warp's Artificial Intelligence series. Hawtin's Plastikman recordings became another central outlet for his music, associated with a stripped-back approach to techno and acid-driven electronic sound. Across his work, he has also used names including Circuit Breaker, Robotman, Concept 1 and Jack Master.
In May 1990, Hawtin and John Acquaviva founded Plus 8 Records, naming the label after the pitch-adjust function on a turntable. Plus 8 became a key vehicle for their records during the early years of Hawtin's career. He later launched M-nus Records in 1998, expanding his work as both an artist and label manager.
Hawtin has also been closely associated with DJ technology. He was involved in the development of Final Scratch, a digital DJ system, and in 2016 launched the technology company PLAYdifferently. Its MODEL 1 mixer was co-designed by Hawtin and Andy Rigby-Jones.
From 2012 to 2015, Hawtin presented ENTER., a weekly party at Space in Ibiza. The series brought his DJ work, label activity and interest in performance technology into one of Ibiza's major club settings.
