Mr. Fingers

Larry Heard, best known as Mr. Fingers, is an American DJ, record producer, and musician associated with the emergence of Chicago house in the 1980s. Recording under a wide range of names, he became closely identified with a strand of house music that paired drum-machine futurism with the warmth and musicality of disco, an approach that later came to be understood as foundational to deep house.

Heard is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in house music’s formative period, and his work under the Mr. Fingers name helped define the genre’s possibilities beyond club functionality. Among his best-known recordings is the 1986 single “Can You Feel It,” a track frequently cited as a landmark in dance music and a touchstone for subsequent producers. Heard’s productions from this era are often discussed for their emphasis on atmosphere and harmonic richness, elements that distinguished his sound within the rapidly developing Chicago scene.

Heard also led Fingers Inc., a group regarded as influential in the early history of house. Fingers Inc.’s 1988 album Another Side is noted as the first long-form house LP, arriving at a time when the genre was still largely defined by singles and DJ-oriented releases. The album’s significance lies not only in its format, but in the way it presented house music as a cohesive listening experience, extending the style’s emotional and musical range.

Across his various aliases, Heard’s output has been linked to acid house, Chicago house, and classic house, with his reputation resting particularly on the deep, melodic end of the spectrum.
