Helena Hauff
Helena Hauff became the first female DJ named BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix of the Year in December 2017. Based in Hamburg, the German DJ and record producer is known for stripped-down techno and electro made with strictly analog equipment, drawing on acid house, EBM and industrial music.
Hauff studied fine art, physics and systematic music science before working as a DJ at Hamburg’s Golden Pudel Club. There she hosted Birds and Other Instruments, a club night whose name reflected her interest in unusual and electronic sounds. Her first record, the Actio Reactio EP, arrived in 2013.
After releases for several labels, including James Dean Brown’s Hypnobeat, Hauff issued her debut full-length album, Discreet Desires, through Werkdiscs in 2015. Rolling Stone placed it at number 19 on its list of the 20 Best EDM and Electronic Albums of 2015. Alongside her own recordings and DJ work, she runs the label Return to Disorder.
