The Prodigy

The Prodigy rose from the early-1990s underground rave circuit to become one of electronic music's biggest crossover acts. Formed in Braintree in 1990 by producer, keyboardist and songwriter Liam Howlett with dancers Keith Flint and Leeroy Thornhill, the group soon added MC and lead vocalist Maxim. Their early singles, “Charly” and “Everybody in the Place”, both reached the UK top five in 1991, bringing rave music into the British mainstream.

Their debut album, Experience, arrived in 1992, rooted in breakbeat hardcore and the high-energy sound of the era's rave culture. On 1994's Music for the Jilted Generation, the band moved into tougher combinations of techno and breakbeats, earning critical acclaim. Howlett has described the group's approach as “electronic punk”, a description reflected in the abrasive rhythms, sampled hooks and, later, prominent vocal performances that became central to their work.

The Prodigy reached their widest commercial and critical success with The Fat of the Land in 1997. The album topped the charts in 16 countries, including the UK and the United States. Its singles “Firestarter” and “Breathe”, released in 1996, each reached number one in the UK, with Flint's confrontational vocal presence becoming a defining part of the band's public identity. “Smack My Bitch Up” also became a UK top ten hit, though its lyrics and music video generated considerable controversy.

Flint and Thornhill began as dancers, with Flint later taking on lead vocals and Thornhill contributing live keyboards on occasion. Thornhill left the group in 2000. Flint died in 2019, leaving Howlett and Maxim as the remaining members. Following a hiatus, the band returned to the stage for touring.

Often associated with big beat, breaks and breakbeat hardcore, The Prodigy have also incorporated industrial, rock and techno elements into their music. AllMusic called them “the premiere dance act for the alternative masses” and “the Godfathers of Rave”. Across their career, the group have sold an estimated 25 million records worldwide, including more than 4.7 million albums in the UK, and achieved seven consecutive UK number one albums. Their awards include two Brit Awards for Best British Dance Act, three MTV Video Music Awards and five MTV Europe Music Awards, alongside two Grammy Award nominations.
