Mat Zo
Mat Zo, the British electronic producer born Matan Zohar, earned a Grammy nomination for his 2013 debut album Damage Control, a record that paired dance music with guest appearances from Public Enemy’s Chuck D and singer Rachel Collier. Released on 5 November 2013 through Anjunabeats and Astralwerks, the album topped Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. It followed the 2012 Porter Robinson collaboration “Easy,” which reached the top of the Beatport charts.
Zohar was born in London on 30 April 1990. He is the son of painter Israel Zohar and violinist Wendy Caron Zohar, and the brother of singer Alma Zohar. His family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he lived until returning to London at age 11. He began playing music after receiving a guitar from his father for his eighth birthday, then played drums and bass in bands as he explored music in London. During his teens, electronic acts including the Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk helped turn his attention toward dance music.
He began DJing around London and started producing his own tracks while still young. At 16, he released his first single, “Exodus,” through a:LOUD Recordings. His trance and progressive house productions were played by DJs including Airwave, Andy Moor and Markus Schulz, while Above & Beyond and Lange also praised his work. Before his album debut, he issued remixes, 12-inch releases and solo productions, finding a regular outlet through Anjunabeats.
Alongside his Mat Zo work, Zohar recorded drum and bass as MRSA for Hospital Records. His second studio album, Self Assemble, arrived on 25 March 2016 via his own Mad Zoo label and included appearances by I See Monstas and Sinead Egan. Later that year he released the three-track Mad EP. Across his work, he has moved between trance, progressive house and club-focused electronic music, while also maintaining projects outside the Mat Zo name.
