About Indie Rock

In early-1980s Britain, indie rock grew from DIY-minded rock released outside the major-label system, while related strands were taking shape in the United States and New Zealand. The name first described a mode of release as much as a musical approach. By the 1990s, it had come to suggest a broad family of guitar-based music with independent roots, even when some of its bands were no longer on independent labels.

Its sound doesn't settle into one fixed template. Jangling guitars and concise pop structures run through part of its lineage, heard in the college-radio circulation of the Smiths and R.E.M.; elsewhere, it leans into noise, looseness, distortion or slower-paced arrangements. British DIY groups including Buzzcocks helped establish its rougher, self-directed spirit, while New Zealand's Dunedin sound, associated with bands such as the Clean, supplied another important strain. Sonic Youth's underground success in the US showed how far the term could stretch toward abrasive, experimental rock.

That range separates indie rock from a narrowly defined style. Indie pop generally points more directly toward pop songwriting, while alternative rock is a wider category that includes many sounds beyond indie's label and DIY history. Indie rock can overlap with both, as well as post-punk revival, garage rock, shoegaze, slowcore, slacker rock and space rock. Its later history includes local variations in Manchester, London and the Thames Valley, among other places, rather than a single uniform sound.

By the 2000s, garage rock and post-punk revival gave indie rock a sharper, more immediate profile, with the Strokes among the bands associated with that return to mainstream visibility. Yet the genre still covers music from melodic jangle to dissonant art rock. The common thread is less a prescribed tempo or instrument than an enduring connection to independent rock culture and the freedom to make guitar music cleaner, stranger, noisier or more intimate than conventional rock formats demand.
