Alt-J’s debut album An Awesome Wave won the 2012 British Mercury Prize, introducing the Leeds band’s mix of indie rock, electronic elements and art-pop experimentation to a wider audience. Formed in 2007, the group originally comprised Joe Newman on guitar, bass and lead vocals, Thom Sonny Green on drums, Gus Unger-Hamilton on keyboards and vocals, and Gwil Sainsbury on guitar and bass.

An Awesome Wave arrived in Europe in May 2012 and reached the United States that September. Sainsbury left Alt-J in early 2014, after which Newman, Green and Unger-Hamilton continued as a three-piece. Their second album, This Is All Yours, was released on 22 September 2014 and entered the UK chart at number one.

The band followed it with Relaxer in June 2017 and The Dream in February 2022. Across those releases, Alt-J have worked within indie and alternative rock while drawing on electronic, folk-tinged and experimental approaches.
