The 1975

Modern Alternative RockModern RockPopPov: IndieRock

The band The 1975 is comprised of Matthew Healy (vocals/guitar), Adam Hann (lead guitar), George Daniel (drums), and Ross MacDonald (bass), all originating from Macclesfield in Cheshire, England. Now residing in Manchester, the members met during their secondary school years and began performing together in their teens.

An eclectic group, the band seamlessly transitions between brooding art rock, crisp electronica, dancefloor R&B, and 80’s gloss pop, intertwined with lead singer Matthew "Matty" Healy's tales of desire, intoxication, and the rawness of modern youth. Their lyrics often explore themes ranging from dysfunctional relationships to the shortcomings of modern society.

In 2012, The 1975 released several EPs, marking the launch of their careers. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2013, made a significant impact globally. Between 2014 and 2015, the band concentrated on touring and hinted at a new sound through social media photos, indicating a shift from their previous black-and-white style.

Their second album, i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, was released in 2016 and further cemented their international popularity, showcasing their versatility in sound and style.

In late 2018, The 1975 released their third studio album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, presenting a unique sound and addressing global issues and human shortcomings.

Released in May 2020, The 1975's fourth album, Notes on a Conditional Form, introduced a new era for the band and has been described as their most socially conscious work yet.

Being Funny in a Foreign Language, their fifth studio album, was initially teased on 1 June 2022 with a message:

"Your new album. Your new era. Your old friends. The 1975"

The album was released in October 2022 and was described by Matty Healy as a "collection of polaroids" rather than a grand masterpiece.
