The 1975

The 1975 formed in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in 2002, when Matty Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald and George Daniel were still at secondary school. The four first performed together as teenagers, developing a partnership that has remained intact through the band’s recorded career. Their name came from a page of scribblings in Healy’s preowned copy of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, dated “1 June, The 1975.”

Healy serves as lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and the group’s primary songwriter; Hann plays lead guitar, MacDonald bass, and Daniel drums while also acting as the band’s primary producer. After beginning to release music professionally through Dirty Hit in 2012, The 1975 opened for major acts and issued the EPs Facedown, Sex, Music for Cars and IV across 2012 and 2013.

Their self-titled debut album arrived in 2013 and topped the UK chart, powered by singles including “Sex,” “Chocolate” and “Robbers.” Every one of the band’s albums has reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom and entered the Billboard 200. Their second album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It, was released in 2016 and also hit No. 1 in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Its box set was nominated for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package at the 59th Grammy Awards.

A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships followed in 2018, winning British Album of the Year at the 2019 Brit Awards. Its single “Give Yourself a Try” received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. The group subsequently released Notes on a Conditional Form in 2020 and Being Funny in a Foreign Language in 2022, with the latter nominated for British Album of the Year at the 2023 Brit Awards. Across their career, The 1975 have received four Brit Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, two Mercury Prize nominations and two Grammy nominations, and were named Band of the Decade at the 2020 NME Awards.
