Portugal. The Man

Portugal. The Man won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards for “Feel It Still,” the 2017 single that became the band’s best-known release. The group is an American rock band formed in Wasilla, Alaska, and based in Portland, Oregon.

Founding member John Gourley and bassist Zach Carothers began playing music together in 2001 while attending Wasilla High School. Portugal. The Man formed in 2005, with Gourley at its center. The project has moved through indie rock, psychedelic pop, progressive rock and electronic textures, while maintaining a broad alternative-rock approach across its recorded work.

The band’s early releases arrived through Fearless Records. Portugal. The Man then issued three albums through its own Approaching AIRballoons label in partnership with Equal Vision Records. In 2010, the group moved to Atlantic Records, beginning a run that produced four full-length albums for the label.

Though the lineup has included musicians such as Carothers, keyboardist Kyle O’Quin, drummer Jason Sechrist, guitarist Eric Howk and Zoe Manville in its live orbit, Portugal. The Man is currently centered on Gourley and supported by touring musicians for performances. “Feel It Still” brought the band its Grammy recognition and remains the clearest mainstream marker in a career that began in Alaska’s local music community.
