Secretly Canadian

Secretly Canadian is an American independent record label based in Bloomington, Indiana, and part of the Secretly Group. The wider Secretly Group also includes the labels Dead Oceans and Jagjaguwar, alongside Secretly Publishing, a music publisher that represents artists, writers, film makers, producers, and comedians.

The label was founded in 1996 by Chris Swanson, Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle, and Jonathan Cargill. It was initially known and branded as Secretly Canadian Records. In 2007, Secretly Canadian collaborated with Jagjaguwar to form Dead Oceans, expanding the group of related imprints operating under the Secretly umbrella.

Secretly Canadian’s roster reflects a broad contemporary independent focus rather than a single-genre specialization. Artists associated with the label include ANOHNI, serpentwithfeet, Wesley Joseph, Hatchie, Baby Rose, Loren Kramar, Eaves Wilder, and Brandon, spanning singer-songwriter work, pop, and other modern alternative forms. The label’s identity is also shaped by its place within a larger organization that combines multiple record labels with an in-house publishing arm, positioning Secretly Canadian within a networked approach to releasing and supporting music from Bloomington while working with artists across different scenes and styles.
