Secretly Canadian
Secretly Canadian was founded in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1996 by Chris Swanson, Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle and Jonathan Cargill. Initially known as Secretly Canadian Records, the label grew from the city’s independent music community into a central part of the wider Secretly Group.
The Secretly Group brings Secretly Canadian together with Dead Oceans, Jagjaguwar and Secretly Publishing, a publisher representing artists, writers, filmmakers, producers and comedians. Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar collaborated to form Dead Oceans in 2007, linking the labels within a shared independent operation. Secretly Canadian is owned by MGM Music.
The label’s artist roster includes Wesley Joseph, Eaves Wilder, Baby Rose, serpentwithfeet, Jens Lekman, Hatchie, Brandon and Loren Kramar. Its continuing base in Bloomington remains central to the label’s identity, even as its work sits within the broader Secretly Group network.
