BADBADNOTGOOD
BADBADNOTGOOD have built a career at the meeting point of jazz musicianship and hip hop production, a combination that has brought them two Grammy Awards from five nominations for songwriting and production work. The Toronto group have worked across jazz, hip hop and alternative music circles, collaborating with artists including Tyler, The Creator, Daniel Caesar, Mick Jenkins, Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah, Charlotte Day Wilson, Baby Rose, Arthur Verocai and MF Doom.
The band was founded in 2010 by bassist Chester Hansen, keyboardist Matthew Tavares and drummer Alexander Sowinski. Saxophonist and keyboardist Leland Whitty, already a frequent collaborator, joined the group in 2016. Their instrumental work draws on jazz technique while approaching arrangements and recordings with the sensibility of hip hop production.
Alongside their collaborative and production work, BADBADNOTGOOD have released six studio albums under their own name. Their most recent, Mid Spiral, arrived in July 2024. The group’s records and guest work have found listeners across hip hop, jazz and alternative music communities, with their collaborative catalogue placing them alongside vocalists, rappers and fellow instrumentalists rather than within a single scene.
