Stones Throw Records

Founded in 1996 by DJ and producer Christopher George Manak, better known as Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw Records has grown from a Los Angeles independent into a home for music that moves well beyond any single genre. Under Manak's direction, the label has released work spanning hip hop and experimental psychedelic rock, with a catalogue shaped by musicians whose approaches are often idiosyncratic, melodic and studio-minded.

Stones Throw's recent roster reflects that wide scope. Benny Sings brings polished, song-focused pop and soul; John Carroll Kirby works across keyboard-led jazz, ambient and pop settings; and Jerry Paper's records pair offbeat songwriting with electronic textures. The label has also issued music by Automatic, Pearl & The Oysters, Sofie Royer, Michi and Brian Ellis, artists whose work extends its interest in art-pop, synthesizers, psych and left-field songwriting.

Based in Los Angeles, Stones Throw has also helped launch Now-Again Records, which became independent in 2012. For its 20th anniversary, LA Weekly called Stones Throw an “eternally evolving experiment,” a description that fits a label built around Peanut Butter Wolf's broad listening habits rather than a fixed house style.
