Capitol Records was founded in 1942 by songwriter Johnny Mercer, producer and songwriter Buddy DeSylva, and record-store owner Glenn E. Wallichs. Regarded as the first West Coast-based record label of note in the United States, it grew from Hollywood, where its headquarters, the Capitol Records Building, remains a recognized Los Angeles landmark.

The label became part of British music company EMI in 1955, operating as its North American subsidiary. Universal Music Group acquired EMI in 2012, and Capitol subsequently became part of UMG through Capitol Music Group.

Capitol's current roster reflects a broad mainstream approach across rap, R&B and pop. Its artists include Ice Spice, That Mexican OT, DOECHII, Kodak Black and Toosii, alongside singers Natalie Jane, Queen Naija and Aidan Bissett. From its Hollywood base, Capitol remains one of the major American labels operating within Universal Music Group.
