Capitol Records
Capitol Records is widely associated with the circular Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood, a landmark that has long served as the label’s headquarters and a visual symbol of its place in American popular music. Founded in 1942, Capitol was established as the first West Coast-based record label of note in the United States, positioning it early on as a major Los Angeles-centered counterpart to the industry’s traditional East Coast power base.
The label was founded by songwriter and singer Johnny Mercer, songwriter and producer Buddy DeSylva, and record store owner Glenn E. Wallichs. Operating from Hollywood, Capitol developed as a full-service American label with a broad commercial remit rather than a niche imprint, a profile that has continued through later corporate eras. In 1955, Capitol was acquired by the British music conglomerate EMI and became its North American subsidiary, a relationship that shaped its mid-century corporate identity and international alignment.
Following industry consolidation in the 21st century, EMI was acquired by Universal Music Group in 2012. Capitol subsequently became part of Universal’s structure through Capitol Music Group, reflecting its status as a key label within a larger multinational organization. Under this ownership, Capitol Records, LLC is owned by Universal Music Group through the Capitol Music Group imprint.
Capitol’s roster in the current era reflects its mainstream orientation across contemporary pop and hip-hop. Artists associated with the label include Ice Spice, Kodak Black, and DOECHII, alongside newer names such as That Mexican OT, Toosii, Natalie Jane, Queen Naija, and Aidan Bissett. Taken together, these signings point to a label identity centered on high-visibility releases and artist development in commercially dominant genres, while remaining rooted in its historic base in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
