Neo-Psychedelic Artists

Neo-psychedelic music appears on both albums and singles, including releases by Tame Impala, and revisits the pop-facing side of psychedelic sound rather than treating it as a period piece. Melodies tend to stay central, with concise song forms supporting distorted guitar tones, studio effects and unusual textures. Fuzz, reversed sounds, tape-based manipulation and sitar-like colour can all add disorientation without abandoning a strong tune.

Its roots lie in psychedelic pop from the mid to late 1960s, when psychedelic techniques were joined to tightly arranged melodic songs and harmony-rich vocal writing. That style remained active into the early 1970s before later artists returned to its ideas. Neo-psychedelic records can therefore feel more direct and song-led than extended psychedelic rock or space rock: the altered production and surreal detail are often contained within a pop structure. The appeal is in that balance, where familiar hooks meet sounds that bend, blur or subtly unsettle them.
