HABIBI Funk Records

Habibi Funk began with a shop in Casablanca. Jannis Stürtz was touring Morocco in 2012 when he turned up old stock in an electronics shop that had once been a record distributor, and the first album he reissued off the back of it, by the Moroccan singer Fadoul, came out in 2015. He didn't expect it to become a standing project. It grew out of Jakarta Records, the Berlin label he has co-run since leaving school.

The remit is funk, soul and jazz made in the Arab world between the 1960s and the 1980s, from Sudan and Egypt through to Libya and Lebanon, and the records come with booklets on where the music came from. Stürtz licenses directly from the musicians or their families on a fifty-fifty split rather than buying masters, which is the deal a contemporary artist would sign.
