King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are a Melbourne rock band whose catalogue moves freely between surf and garage rock, psychedelia, jazz fusion, folk, heavy metal, synth-pop and progressive rock. Formed in 2010, the group is also known as KGLW, King Gizz and King Gizzard. Their live shows have become a central part of their reputation, matching the restless range of their recordings with an energetic onstage approach.

The current lineup is Stu Mackenzie on vocals, guitar and flute; Ambrose Kenny-Smith on vocals, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone; Cook Craig on guitar, keyboards and vocals; Joey Walker on guitar and vocals; Lucas Harwood on bass and vocals; and Michael Cavanagh on drums and vocals. The band’s early releases blended surf music with garage rock and came out through Flightless, before a run of psychedelic rock records in the early 2010s.

As the decade progressed, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard widened their sound considerably. Quarters! drew on jazz fusion, while Paper Mâché Dream Balloon took a folk-inspired direction. In 2016, Nonagon Infinity brought the band broader mainstream attention and won the ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album. The following year, they carried out a pledge to issue five studio albums within one calendar year.

That same 2017 run began the band’s trilogy of microtonal albums with Flying Microtonal Banana. Later work has incorporated heavy metal, synth-pop and progressive rock, alongside lyrics addressing environmental themes. Their songs also contain elements of an interconnected fictional universe that fans call the “Gizzverse.”

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have continued releasing music under the KGLW name. Their 28th studio album, Alien Metal, was surprise released on 14 August 2026.
