Mildlife

Mildlife are a Melbourne psychedelic jazz fusion group formed in 2010. Their music brings together jazz, psych, disco, funk and electronic textures, with cosmic synthesizers alongside Rhodes piano, guitar, flute and a rhythm section built for extended grooves.

The group’s current lineup is Tomas Shanahan on bass guitar, Kevin McDowell on Rhodes electric piano and synthesizer, Jim Rindfleish on drums and engineering, and Adam Halliwell on guitar, flute and vocoder. Their live approach has included improvisation, a feature reflected in the long-form arrangements associated with the band’s early work.

Mildlife released the album Phase, whose six tracks were presented as a meeting point between jazz, funk and disco. “The Magnificent Moon,” a nine-minute single from that period, paired progressive 1970s influences and electronic krautrock with rhythmic funk, house and dream-pop elements.

The band have released three studio albums. Their third, Chorus, arrived in March 2024.
