Julien Baker

Julien Rose Baker is an American indie rock singer-songwriter and guitarist whose work pairs moody arrangements with confessional writing about Christianity, addiction, mental illness, human nature, and other deeply personal subjects. Born September 29, 1995, and raised in suburban Memphis, Tennessee, she first emerged as a solo artist while studying at Middle Tennessee State University.

Baker released her debut album, Sprained Ankle, in 2015. The record received critical acclaim and appeared on several year-end lists that year. She later signed with Matador Records for her second studio album, Turn Out the Lights, released in 2017. That album also drew critical praise, extending the spare, emotionally direct approach associated with her early work.

Her third album, Little Oblivions, arrived in 2021 and expanded her sound into fuller band arrangements. It became her first album to reach the top 40 of the Billboard 200. Alongside her solo recordings, Baker is a member of Boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. The group released its self-titled debut EP in October 2018, reunited in January 2023, and issued its first studio album, The Record, that March. Boygenius followed it with The Rest in October 2023.

Baker has received six Grammy Award nominations and three Grammy wins as part of Boygenius. She also began a country duo with Torres in 2024.
