Portishead

Portishead are a British group established in 1991 in Bristol, England, named after a nearby town with the same name, situated 8 miles west of Bristol. Alongside Massive Attack, they are recognized as pioneers of the trip-hop genre, or "Bristol sound," characterized by a downtempo electronic style that evokes a surreal, trippy, dreamy, and occasionally dark ambiance, often blending elements of hip-hop.

The band is comprised of lead vocalist Beth Gibbons, programmer and producer Geoff Barrow, and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Utley. Dave McDonald, who was an engineer on their first two albums, Dummy (1994) and Portishead (1997), is also frequently regarded as a member of the group.

After the release of their second album, Portishead took an extended break during which the members engaged in various solo projects. They did not return until 2008 with their third studio album, fittingly named Third. This album presented a more grandiose sound while still maintaining the eerie trip-hop atmosphere familiar to fans, now also incorporating elements of industrial music and krautrock.
