Air
Air is a French music duo from Versailles, consisting of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel. They emerged in the late 1990s with a sound often associated with ambient pop, downtempo, and electronica, combining song structures with studio-driven textures and a calm, melodic sensibility.
The group’s debut album, Moon Safari, was released in 1998 and became an international success. It was also critically acclaimed, helping to define Air’s early reputation outside France. The album includes the track “Sexy Boy,” one of the best-known songs from their initial period and a key entry point to their work.
Air followed Moon Safari with The Virgin Suicides, created as the score to Sofia Coppola’s first film, The Virgin Suicides. The project placed the duo in a film-music context while maintaining the atmospheric approach associated with their studio albums, and it broadened their profile beyond conventional album releases.
After their early breakthrough, Air continued to release studio albums that expanded and reshaped their palette. Their subsequent releases include 10 000 Hz Legend, Talkie Walkie, Pocket Symphony, Love 2, Le voyage dans la lune, and Music for Museum. Across this run of records, the duo remained rooted in electronic production while moving between pop-oriented songwriting and more conceptual or soundtrack-like formats.
Air have cited a wide variety of musical styles and artists as influences, and their work is commonly linked with genres such as indietronica and trip hop alongside their core downtempo and ambient pop associations. As a duo, Godin and Dunckel have been credited in roles including composition, performance, and production, reflecting a self-contained approach to writing and recording that has been central to their identity.
