Shinedown
Shinedown hold the record for the most number one singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, with 23, and every one of the band’s released singles has reached the chart’s top five. Billboard ranked the group number one on its Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists chart on June 3, 2021, marking the Mainstream Rock chart’s 40th anniversary. Shinedown have sold more than 10 million records worldwide.
The Jacksonville, Florida rock band was formed in 2001 by singer Brent Smith after his previous group, Dreve, dissolved. Still signed to Atlantic Records, Smith assembled Shinedown’s original lineup with guitarist Jasin Todd, bassist Brad Stewart and drummer Barry Kerch. That lineup remained intact through the band’s first two album cycles. Changes followed in the late 2000s, and the group later settled around Smith and Kerch with guitarist Zach Myers and bassist Eric Bass.
Shinedown’s debut album, Leave a Whisper, arrived in 2003, followed by Us and Them in 2005. The band released The Sound of Madness in 2008, then Amaryllis in 2012 and Threat to Survival in 2015. Its subsequent records include Attention Attention from 2018, Planet Zero from 2022 and Eight, released May 29, 2026. The band’s music has been associated with rock, hard rock, alternative rock, post-grunge and alternative metal. In 2025, Yardbarker writer Jeff Mezydlo included Shinedown in a list of “the greatest metal acts that formed in the 2000s.”
