Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a rock band from Los Angeles, CA, known for blending rap, funk, punk, and rock, largely categorized as an alternative rock band. They gained mainstream recognition with their fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), which featured hits like “Give it Away” and “Under the Bridge.” Following guitarist John Frusciante's departure and decreased success with One Hot Minute, the band reunited for 1999's Californication. This album, along with singles like “Around the World,” “Scar Tissue,” and “Otherside,” reignited their popularity. After the releases of 2002’s By the Way and 2006’s Stadium Arcadium, Frusciante left again to focus on his solo career, and the group brought in Josh Klinghoffer for 2011's I’m With You.
In December 2019, the band announced on Instagram that Klinghoffer had departed after 10 years, and Frusciante would rejoin. With him back, they created a wealth of material leading to two 2022 albums, Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen.
Their lyrics initially revolved around themes of sex, drugs, and life in Los Angeles, with lead singer Anthony Kiedis primarily rapping due to his lack of confidence in singing. Many band members struggled with drug addiction; both Kiedis and Frusciante underwent rehab for heroin addiction at different times. Californication marked a shift in their themes and lifestyle, focusing more on sobriety and exploring themes of love and addiction, even critiquing Los Angeles in the title. Kiedis also started to sing more confidently. These changes have contributed to their longevity and relevance despite multiple lineup changes over more than two decades.
