Train
Train is a rock band from San Francisco, formed in 1993. The current members include Patrick Monahan (lead vocals), Luis Maldonado (guitar), Hector Maldonado (bass, vocals), Drew Shoals (drums), Jerry Becker (keyboards, guitar), Sakai Smith (backup vocals), and Nikita Houston (backup vocals).
Initially featuring Monahan, Rob Hotchkiss, Jimmy Stafford, Scott Underwood, and Charlie Colin, Train gained success with their 1998 album Train and the hit “Meet Virginia”. Their 2001 album, Drops of Jupiter, featured the Grammy-winning single “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)”. This album was double platinum in the US and Canada and is their best-seller.
Their third album, My Private Nation, released in 2003, went platinum in the US with “Calling All Angels” as a hit. After Hotchkiss and Colin left, they released For Me, It’s You in 2006 with new members Brandon Bush (keyboards) and Johnny Colt (bass). Despite favorable reviews, it was a commercial letdown, leading to a two-year break.
In 2009, they released Save Me, San Francisco. Singles “Hey, Soul Sister”, “If It’s Love”, and “Marry Me” performed well on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went gold in the US and Australia. Jerry Becker and Hector Maldonado joined the touring lineup in 2008, with Nikita Houston and Sakai Smith joining in 2012.
California 37 came out in 2012. Its single “Drive By” was their first UK Top 20 hit since 2009. Drew Shoals replaced Scott Underwood in 2014.
Their seventh album, Bulletproof Picasso, was released in September, reaching number 5 on the Billboard Top 200. The single “Angel in Blue Jeans” made the Billboard Top 100.
Following the Bulletproof Picasso tour, Train released Christmas in Tahoe in November 2015 through Amazon Music, featuring classic and original holiday tracks.
In June 2016, they released Train Does Led Zeppelin II, covering Led Zeppelin’s second album. A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat, their tenth album, came out in January 2017. Jimmy Stafford left the band in late 2016, and Luis Maldonado took over as lead guitarist.
