Bryan Adams
Bryan Guy Adams, born November 5, 1959, is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, record producer and photographer whose records and singles have sold between 75 million and more than 100 million copies worldwide. He was the most played artist on Canadian radio during the 2010s, with 25 top-15 singles in Canada and more than a dozen in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
Adams released his self-titled debut album at age 20, then broke through in North America with 1983's Cuts Like a Knife. Its title track and the ballad “Straight from the Heart” established his chart profile, with the latter becoming his first U.S. top-10 hit. The following year's Reckless made him an international star. A number-one album in Canada and the U.S., it was the first album by a Canadian artist certified diamond in Canada. Its run of singles included “Run to You,” “Summer of ’69” and “Heaven,” the last of which reached number one in the U.S.
His 1987 album Into the Fire reached number two in Canada and the U.S. top 10, led by “Heat of the Night.” In 1991, Adams released “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You,” a worldwide hit that topped the charts in at least 19 countries. It spent 16 consecutive weeks at number one in the UK and has sold more than 15 million copies globally. The song appeared on Waking Up the Neighbours, another worldwide number-one album, which sold 16 million copies and received diamond certification in Canada. “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started” also became a Canadian number one and U.S. number two hit.
From 1993 onward, Adams scored major international ballad hits with “Please Forgive Me,” “All for Love” and “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?” The latter two topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. He was ranked 48th among all-time top artists on the Billboard Hot 100. His songwriting for films has earned five Golden Globe nominations and three Academy Award nominations, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media among 16 Grammy nominations.
Adams has received 20 Juno Awards and has been inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Canada’s Walk of Fame, the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. On May 1, 2010, he received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, recognizing 30 years of contributions to the arts.
