Lyrically and aesthetically, it likes exaggeration and role-play, sometimes borrowing sci-fi imagery or a knowing, camp tone.

The style took shape in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s, where the sound and the look were tightly linked. Performers made a statement with glitter, platform shoes, dramatic hair, and heavy makeup, using flamboyance as part of the performance rather than an afterthought. Those visuals often played with androgyny and shifting gender roles, turning the stage into a kind of dress-up theater.

Musically, glam rock pulls from a wide grab bag: bubblegum pop’s immediacy, 1950s rock and roll’s snap, and the more intricate ambitions of art rock. David Bowie is a clear example of how glam could fold science fiction and persona-building into sharp rock songs, while Queen brought a grand, melodic approach that made the drama feel stadium-sized.
