Glam Rock Artists

Marc Bolan’s 1971 performance of “Hot Love” on Top of the Pops brought glitter and satin into a strain of British rock that drew as readily on bubblegum pop and cabaret as on electric-guitar tradition. Glam rock made visual presentation part of the music’s proposition: platform shoes, elaborate hair, makeup and theatrical dress accompanied songs built from rock and roll’s directness, pop hooks and, at times, art rock’s more stylised ideas.

The style developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s, with Bolan and T. Rex often placed at its opening point. David Bowie gave glam a more shape-shifting, science-fiction-facing dimension, while Roxy Music connected it to art rock and a cool, designed modernism. The genre’s look frequently used camp and androgyny, treating gender roles as material for performance rather than keeping rock’s established masculine image intact. Those visual choices weren't an optional accessory to the records and concerts, they were central to how glam announced itself.

Sonically, glam rock can move between concise pop structures, 1950s rock and roll rhythms, hard-edged guitar music and theatrical touches borrowed from cabaret. Its songs may be punchy and catchy, but the genre also allows for artful arrangement and an exaggerated sense of persona. That range separates it from straightforward classic rock or hard rock: glam’s focus is less on authenticity and heaviness than on artifice, spectacle and pop immediacy. It also differs from disco, despite occasional overlap in danceable pulse and stylish presentation, by remaining rooted in rock performance and its sources.

By the middle of the 1970s, glam rock’s initial British wave had receded, but its mix of theatrical self-invention, pop accessibility and provocative style fed into later punk, post-punk, gothic rock, glam metal and the visual language of New Romanticism. Its appeal lies in that tension between familiar rock forms and deliberately unreal surfaces.
