Art Rock Artists

In the late 1960s, art rock emerged as rock musicians drew ideas from contemporary art, academic music, the avant-garde, classical composition and jazz. It treated the album and the studio as spaces for extended forms and deliberate construction, rather than limiting itself to rock's dance-floor or pop-entertainment functions. The result can be cerebral, theatrical or abstract, with arrangements that favour contrast, texture and compositional detail as much as a direct riff or chorus.

The term sits between mainstream rock and more uncompromising experimental work. Art rock may use unusual structures, ambitious concepts or techniques borrowed from outside rock, yet it can still retain songs, electric guitars and familiar band instrumentation. It overlaps with progressive rock and is sometimes used for experimental rock acts, but it isn't simply a synonym for either: progressive rock often points toward virtuoso playing and long-form development, while art rock more broadly describes rock shaped by artistic and avant-garde concerns. Its strongest association is with the period from 1966 and 1967 through the late 1970s, though its methods later fed into other popular styles.
