Hollywood Records
Hollywood Records is a Burbank, California label owned by Disney Music Group, founded in December 1989 by Michael Eisner, then Disney's CEO. It works across pop, rock, alternative, hip-hop and country, taking on music that doesn't suit the flagship Walt Disney Records, and it releases soundtracks from Marvel Studios, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, FX and other Disney companies.
Its first big success was Queen. In February 1990 the label bought the North American distribution rights to the band's whole catalog for $10 million, and Innuendo followed in 1991. Catalog sales brought Disney nearly $94 million by 1995, but little else worked in those years, and the label had missed out on signing Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins and Dr. Dre.
The turnaround came with Fastball's All the Pain Money Can Buy and its hit "The Way" in 1998, then Hilary Duff's Metamorphosis, which sold over three million copies in the US. Duff's success set the pattern for Disney Channel talent: Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, the Jonas Brothers and Bridgit Mendler all recorded for Hollywood into the mid-2010s, alongside Breaking Benjamin and Plain White T's.
The current roster includes Sofia Carson, Tini, Andy Grammer, Joywave, Almost Monday, Little Image and Freya Skye, and Queen remain with the label in North America.
