Guns N' Roses
Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1985, created from the merger of L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. After signing with Geffen Records in 1986, the group emerged as one of the best-known rock acts of its era, associated with hard rock and glam metal as well as broader rock styles.
The band’s best-known, or “classic,” lineup consisted of vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. Rose has remained the central constant in the group’s history, while the membership around him has shifted repeatedly across different periods of activity.
Guns N’ Roses began with a founding configuration that included Rose and Stradlin alongside guitarist Tracii Guns, drummer Rob Gardner, and bassist Ole Beich. Over time, the band expanded and rotated personnel, with former and later members including drummers Matt Sorum, Josh Freese, and Bryan “Brain” Mantia; guitarists Gilby Clarke, Paul Tobias, Robin Finck, Buckethead (Brian Carroll), Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, and DJ Ashba; bassist Tommy Stinson; and multi-instrumental and keyboard contributors such as Dizzy Reed, Chris Pitman, and Melissa Reese. Additional later-era touring and recording personnel have included guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Frank Ferrer.
Across its various incarnations, Guns N’ Roses has been credited under many alternate spellings and stylizations of its name, reflecting the way the band has been billed internationally and across different releases. The group’s identity, however, has remained tied to its Los Angeles origins, its 1980s formation, and a core sound rooted in hard rock, with glam-metal associations often linked to its early period and public profile.
