Decca Music Group is associated with Decca Records, a British label established in 1929 by Edward Lewis following his acquisition of the gramophone manufacturer The Decca Gramophone Company. From its early years, Decca developed a reputation tied to recording and production standards, and it became known for technical innovations that helped define the label’s identity in the marketplace.

Decca expanded beyond the United Kingdom by setting up an American subsidiary under the Decca name. That operation later separated from the British company just before the Second World War, becoming an independent company. In 1962, the American Decca business became a subsidiary of MCA Inc., marking a distinct corporate path from the British parent while retaining the shared name and legacy.

In Britain, Decca grew into one of the country’s leading recording companies, described as the second most successful in the UK. The label marked fifty years of existence in 1979. Shortly afterward, it was sold to PolyGram, reflecting wider consolidation in the recording industry during that period.

Both Decca and its former American subsidiary were later acquired by Universal Music. In contemporary usage, the Decca name remains closely linked with high-profile recordings and a roster that includes major classical performers and ensembles. Artists associated with the label’s releases include the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Jess Gillam, and Yunchan Lim, alongside performers such as Alexandra Whittingham and Alis Huws, and composers represented in the catalog such as Ola Gjeilo and Frédéric Chopin.
