Decca Music Group

Decca Music Group draws on the history of Decca Records, the British-American label founded in 1929 by Edward Lewis after he acquired the Decca Gramophone Company. Decca built its name across popular and classical music, pairing commercial success with an early commitment to recording technology. Its British operation became Britain’s second most successful recording company before its sale to PolyGram shortly after the label’s 50th anniversary in 1979. Decca and its former American subsidiary were later acquired by Universal Music.

Classical music is central to Decca’s identity. After the Second World War, the label assembled a substantial catalogue of orchestral, operatic and chamber repertoire, supported by recording techniques that brought an unusual realism to mid-century releases. Between 1958 and 1965, Decca issued the first complete recording of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, a project widely described as the gramophone’s greatest achievement. The company also adopted digital recording technology early.

The label’s popular catalogue has been equally broad. In Britain, its early artists included Gertrude Lawrence, George Formby, Jack Hylton and Vera Lynn, while the American company recorded Bing Crosby, Al Jolson, the Andrews Sisters and the Mills Brothers. Later releases connected Decca with Bill Haley & His Comets, Buddy Holly, Tommy Steele, Lonnie Donegan, Johnny Cash, Eddie Cochran and the Rolling Stones. Its UK catalogue also included licensed recordings by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and others.

In its present classical-facing activity, Decca Music Group is associated with musicians and ensembles including pianist Yunchan Lim, saxophonist Jess Gillam, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, guitarist Alexandra Whittingham, composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo, harpist Alis Huws, Voces8 and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Their presence reflects a catalogue rooted in classical performance while extending from solo instrumental work and choral music to orchestral recording.
