Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson rose to national prominence by winning the first season of American Idol in 2002, turning a television-vote victory into a long-running music and broadcasting career. Born Kelly Brianne Clarkson on April 24, 1982, in Fort Worth, Texas, she signed with RCA Records that year and released “A Moment Like This,” a chart-topping single that became the best-selling US single of 2002.

Her debut album, Thankful (2003), drew on R&B and gospel and entered the Billboard 200 at number one. Clarkson shifted toward pop rock on Breakaway (2004), one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century. “Since U Been Gone” and “Behind These Hazel Eyes” ranked among the top ten US songs of 2005, while “Because of You” topped charts in Europe. Her darker rock-oriented My December followed in 2007 and received a lukewarm response. She returned to a more radio-focused pop rock approach with All I Ever Wanted (2009) and Stronger (2011), which produced the number-one singles “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).”

Clarkson expanded into holiday music with Wrapped in Red in 2013, the year’s best-selling holiday album. Its “Underneath the Tree” was named by ASCAP as the most popular Christmas song released in the 21st century. After Piece by Piece reached number one in 2015, she moved to Atlantic Records for Meaning of Life (2017), When Christmas Comes Around... (2021), and Chemistry (2023), her final release on a major label. Across her first seven studio albums, she placed 12 top-ten hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 between 2002 and 2024, alongside 10 top-ten singles in the UK, Canada, and Australia. She also became the first artist to top Billboard’s pop, adult contemporary, country, and dance airplay charts.

Alongside recording, Clarkson became a major television presence. She coached on The Voice for ten seasons between 2018 and 2026, finishing with four winning contestants, the most for a female coach in the show’s history. From 2019 to 2026, she hosted The Kelly Clarkson Show. Her honors include three Grammy Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, four American Music Awards, eight Daytime Emmy Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With more than 82 million records sold worldwide, she has also been recognized by Rolling Stone, Billboard, and VH1 for her singing and commercial record.
