ROSALÍA

Rosalía Vila Tobella, known mononymously as Rosalía, is a Spanish singer-songwriter and actress whose records have moved between flamenco, pop, hip-hop, reggaeton and art pop. Born on 25 September 1992 in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Spain, she became interested in Spanish folk music at 14. She later studied musicology at the Catalonia College of Music, graduating with honours in 2017.

Her early work included Los Ángeles (2017), a collaborative cover album with Raül Refree that served as her debut. Her second album, El mal querer (2018), brought flamenco into dialogue with pop and hip-hop through a baccalaureate project concept. Its singles “Malamente” and “Pienso en tu mirá” drew broad attention in Spain and critical acclaim. The album won the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year and was later included in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, opening the way for her international profile.

In 2019, Rosalía explored urbano music on “Con altura” and “Yo x ti, tú x mí,” both of which reached a global audience. Billboard presented her with its Rising Star Award that year, citing her flamenco-influenced pop, and she became the first Spanish-singing act nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards. Her third studio album, Motomami (2022), shifted away from the new flamenco focus of El mal querer and gave reggaeton an experimental treatment. Led by “La Fama,” “Saoko” and “Despechá,” it was Metacritic’s best-reviewed album of 2022.

Her fourth album, Lux (2025), fused art pop with classical elements, received widespread critical acclaim and set several all-time records for a Spanish-speaking female artist. Across her career, Rosalía has earned thirteen number-one singles in Spain, the most by a local female artist. Her awards include two Grammy Awards, eleven Latin Grammy Awards, including two Album of the Year prizes, a BRIT Award, four MTV Video Music Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, three UK Music Video Awards, an Ivor Novello Award and two Premio Ruido awards.
