Lorde
Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, born November 7, 1996, and better known as Lorde, is a pop artist from New Zealand. While her early music critiqued fame and the "pop star" culture, her second album embraced it more while maintaining her renowned writing style.
She gained international attention with her debut EP, The Love Club, but it was her track "Royals" that topped charts worldwide, including the US, that truly launched her career. At just sixteen, her use of effective metaphors and allegories made her a captivating media figure.
Though initially dismissed as a one-hit-wonder, her top-ten follow-up single "Team," curating the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay soundtrack, and friendships with A-listers like Taylor Swift have kept her in the public eye, along with the anticipation for her new music.
On February 27, 2017, a cryptic commercial aired across New Zealand, showing Lorde sipping soda before cutting to the date “3.2.17 NYC, 3.3.17 NZ.” This marked the release date for “Green Light,” the lead single from her highly anticipated second album, Melodrama. Both the single and its video were further promoted through her Twitter and website imwaitingforit.com. Released in June 2017, about four years after Pure Heroine, Melodrama received critical acclaim immediately and was even nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year.
