Universal Music Ltda. traces its history back to 1945.

The first Universal Music predecessor was Sinter, which was active from 1945 to 1955. In 1955, it became Companhia Brasileira De Discos, and Philips acquired the company three years later. In April 1971, the name changed to Companhia Brasileira De Discos Phonogram, followed by Polygram Discos Ltda. between 1978 and 1985. In 1985, it was renamed Polygram do Brasil Ltda..

After Universal Music Group acquired PolyGram at the end of 1998, it merged with Universal Music in 1999. Universal Music began operations in Brazil in 1997 through BMG Brasil Ltda.
