Planet Mu
Planet Mu is an English electronic music label created and run by Mike Paradinas, best known for his work as μ-Ziq. It began in 1995 as an imprint associated with Virgin Records, originally used to release music by μ-Ziq and related artists. Paradinas later set the label up independently, after Virgin proved ill-suited to marketing the kind of music Planet Mu was releasing.
Across its history, Planet Mu has been defined by a willingness to follow new strains of UK and international electronic music as they emerged. After early releases associated with intelligent dance music, the label shifted its attention toward jungle and breakcore, then moved into grime and dubstep, and later became closely identified with footwork. This pattern of stylistic movement has made the label a recognizable home for forward-leaning club music and experimental electronic forms, rather than a single fixed genre.
Paradinas has also used Planet Mu as an outlet for his own recordings under multiple aliases, including μ-Ziq, Kid Spatula, and Tusken Raiders. Alongside this continuing thread, the label’s roster has reflected its changing interests. Artists such as Jlin and Rian Treanor illustrate Planet Mu’s later focus on rhythmically complex, percussive electronic music, while names including FaltyDL and Slikback point to the label’s broader engagement with contemporary club and experimental scenes. The label’s catalog also includes work by artists such as Ship Sket, Nondi_, Cara Tolmie, and James Krivchenia.
Planet Mu marked its 30th anniversary in 2025, underscoring its longevity as an independently run label with a history that tracks several major phases of electronic music from the mid-1990s onward.
