Strut
Strut Records is a British independent record label known for connecting contemporary dance floors with deeper strands of musical history. Established in 1999 by Quinton Scott, the label developed an identity around dance music while also embracing jazz and afrobeat, often framing its releases as rediscoveries and reappraisals rather than simple reissues.
In its early period from 1999 to 2003, Strut focused on unearthing overlooked or “lost” recordings from across dance music’s past. Its scope ranged widely, taking in hard funk, underground disco, original breaks, Nigerian afrobeat, old school hip hop, and music library recordings. The label’s curatorial approach emphasized not only the tracks themselves but also the surrounding context: the people who made the music, the clubs where it was played, and the scenes that shaped it. Strut’s releases were presented with detailed liner notes and archival material such as photographs and memorabilia, reflecting an editorial style that treated dance music history as something to be documented and explained.
After a period of inactivity, Strut was reactivated in January 2008 and later became part of the !K7 label group. Across its output, the label has maintained a broad musical remit that includes dance music, jazz, and afrobeat. Artists associated with Strut’s catalog and profile include Patrice Rushen, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and Mulatu Astatke, names that reflect its interest in both groove-based dance music and jazz-rooted traditions. Sun Ra also appears among the label’s notable artists, aligning with Strut’s long-running engagement with jazz history and its more exploratory edges.
Strut’s artist roster and affiliations also point to an interest in contemporary projects that draw on these traditions. Notable artists connected with the label include Nubiyan Twist and Momoko Gill, alongside figures such as Matthew Herbert, reflecting a willingness to move between archival work and modern recordings. Taken together, Strut’s releases present a label identity built around research, compilation, and genre-spanning dance music culture, with jazz and afrobeat as central threads rather than side interests.
