Strut

Strut Records is a British independent record label known for connecting contemporary dance floors with deeper strands of musical history. Established in 1999 by Quinton Scott, the label developed an identity around dance music while also embracing jazz and afrobeat, often framing its releases as rediscoveries and reappraisals rather than simple reissues.

In its early period from 1999 to 2003, Strut focused on unearthing overlooked or “lost” recordings from across dance music’s past. Its scope ranged widely, taking in hard funk, underground disco, original breaks, Nigerian afrobeat, old school hip hop, and music library recordings. The label’s curatorial approach emphasized not only the tracks themselves but also the surrounding context: the people who made the music, the clubs where it was played, and the scenes that shaped it.
