Toolroom
Toolroom is named after an actual tool shed. Mark Knight and his brother Stuart started the label there in 2003, in the garden of a house in Maidstone, southeast of London, and the early catalogue was mostly Mark's own productions: house records with enough techno in them that the sound didn't have a settled name yet.
It does now. Tech house became the dominant commercial dance sound over the two decades that followed, and Toolroom's place in that shift owed something to timing. It was among the first labels selling through Beatport, and by 2014 Knight was that store's second best-selling artist behind deadmau5. Miami Music Week did the rest, giving the label sustained contact with both the industry and the people buying the records.
Toolroom has since grown past the catalogue into touring residencies, a weekly radio show and a production school.
