Outsider House Artists

Lo-fi recording and processing techniques give outsider house its grain, distortion and worn-in texture, setting it apart from the clean finish of mainstream deep house and much EDM. Its house pulse can draw from deep house, techno, ambient and noise, with rough-edged drums, blurred samples and imperfect surfaces often carrying as much weight as melody. The result may feel hazy or abrasive without leaving the dancefloor behind.

The term “outsider dance” surfaced in 2012 through London DJ Ben UFO and was subsequently used by journalist Scott Wilson for a loose set of producers and labels outside house music’s usual centre. Laurel Halo and Anthony Naples were among the artists associated with that early description. The name was never a precise musical rulebook, and it has also been used as outsider house or raw house. Rather than a separate rhythm system, it describes an approach to house production: less polished, more tactile, and open to ambient space, techno pressure and noise.
