Noise pop pairs bright, hook-forward songwriting with a deliberate layer of abrasion. The style emerged in the mid-1980s in the United Kingdom, with the Jesus and Mary Chain’s debut album Psychocandy widely cited as an early blueprint. Related textures also showed up among bands linked to the British C86 movement. Noise pop fed directly into shoegaze, especially in its fondness for dense guitar layering and volume, even when the songs stayed compact and catchy.

Compared with noise rock, noise pop keeps the melody in clear view and usually avoids extended, punishing repetition. Compared with indie rock, it pushes the guitar sound further into saturation and feedback, treating noise as part of the arrangement rather than a moment of chaos. Artists like Panda Bear and Battles reflect how the approach can stretch beyond guitar bands, keeping pop structure intact while letting texture and dissonance do as much work as the hooks.
