Sludge Metal Artists

On album-length releases, sludge metal gives riffs room to drag, repeat and accumulate weight rather than rush toward a hook. Down-tuned guitars, thick distortion and slow or lurching tempos produce a dense, abrasive sound, while vocals often arrive as hoarse shouts or strained cries. Its lyrics commonly confront poverty, addiction and pollution, matching the music's bleak pressure.

The style grew from early-to-mid-1980s California hardcore, where bands including Black Flag slowed punk's attack and took cues from Black Sabbath. The Melvins expanded that approach later in the decade, and Louisiana groups such as Eyehategod developed its raw, punishing side. Sludge metal shares doom metal's heaviness and deliberate pace, but hardcore punk supplies a harsher rhythmic shove and a more confrontational vocal approach. It can also move beyond its bluntest form: Baroness and Mastodon brought progressive-metal structures into the style, while other bands stretched it toward post-metal, crust punk or anarcho-punk. At its core, though, sludge favors physical heft, repetition and friction over polish.
