Nuclear Blast

Nuclear Blast Records is a German label whose catalogue traces a shift from underground punk roots to a broad cross-section of heavy metal. Founded in 1987 by Markus Staiger in Donzdorf, it began by releasing hardcore punk records before expanding into metal styles that include thrash metal, melodic death metal, grindcore, industrial metal, power metal, and black metal. Alongside band albums, the label has also released tribute albums, reflecting a focus on genre history as well as contemporary scenes.

From its base in Donzdorf, Nuclear Blast developed into an international operation with subsidiaries in Germany, the United States, and Brazil. The label’s identity is closely tied to metal’s heavier and more extreme subgenres, while also maintaining room for melodic and modern approaches. Artists associated with the label in recent years illustrate that range: Epica represents symphonic and melodic metal, Sylosis aligns with modern thrash and extreme metal, and acts such as Amaranthe, Beyond The Black, and Battle Beast point to the label’s presence in contemporary power and melodic metal. The Halo Effect reflects the label’s connection to melodic death metal, while The Hellacopters signals an openness to harder-edged rock adjacent to metal. Blackbriar adds a darker, atmospheric strand to the roster.

Nuclear Blast has also been involved in the promotion and distribution of post-hardcore and metalcore through SharpTone Records. Its portfolio previously included another post-hardcore/metalcore label, Arising Empire, until Arising Empire was acquired by Kontor New Media in 2020. Across these activities, Nuclear Blast has remained identified with heavy music, moving from its early hardcore punk releases into a long-running focus on metal in many forms, supported by a multi-territory presence spanning Europe and the Americas.
