Boris is a Japanese rock band known for moving between sludge metal, drone, noise, psychedelia, and minimalism. Formed in Tokyo in 1992, the group has built a catalog that spans more than 20 studio albums alongside live recordings, compilations, EPs, singles, and collaborative releases issued internationally.

The band’s core lineup consists of drummer Atsuo, guitarist and bassist Takeshi, and guitarist and keyboardist Wata. All three share vocal duties. An early member, Nagata, played drums from 1992 to 1996. Across its output, Boris has worked in formats that range from long-form, minimal drone pieces to heavier, riff-driven material associated with sludge and related metal styles, while also drawing on noise and rock traditions.

Collaboration has been a recurring part of Boris’s recorded work. The band has released projects with artists including Sunn O))), Merzbow, Keiji Haino, and guitarist Michio Kurihara, reflecting its connections to both experimental music and heavy rock scenes. Boris has released music through a range of labels around the world, including Relapse Records, Third Man Records, Sacred Bones Records, and 4AD.
