Joy Orbison
Peter O'Grady, known as Joy Orbison or Joy O, is an English electronic musician whose style merges house, dubstep, UK funky, UK garage, and old-school jungle. O'Grady gained underground success with his debut single "Hyph Mngo," released on Hotflush Recordings in September 2009, and is also recognized for collaborating with Boddika.
He attributes his early exposure to jungle and UK garage to his uncle Ray Keith. At the age of 13, he began DJing and later transitioned into production in his 20s, initially using Fruity Loops to craft 8-bar grime loops before evolving his sound to incorporate house, disco, and dubstep. His wide array of influences includes J Dilla, My Bloody Valentine, GG Allin, Josef K, and The Beach Boys.
"Hyph Mngo" was acclaimed as the most forward-thinking dubstep track of 2009, with global airplay and floorplay. This was succeeded by "Brkln Clln" on O'Grady’s label Doldrums, co-run with Impey. In 2010, he released "The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow" on Aus Music, an eclectic label founded by Will Saul and Fink.
"Hyph Mngo" ranked #23 in Resident Advisor's top 100 tracks of the 2000s and #1 in Fact Magazine’s top tracks of 2009. He was listed as number 18 in NME’s New Music Tips of 2010 and 19th in Resident Advisor's 'Top DJs of 2012' poll.
In 2012, O'Grady started residencies at his London club night 'Just For You' and Manchester’s 'meandyou' party. He also launched the Hinge Finger record label, co-run with artist Will Bankhead. As of 2020, Joy Orbison appears as himself hosting Still Slippin' Los Santos, an in-game radio station in Grand Theft Auto Online, which, although primarily advertised as a techno/drum and bass pirate radio station, features experimental electronic, UK hip-hop, Grime, and Dancehall.
