In the early 1990s, diva house brought prominent female vocals and piano-led breakdowns to house music, giving its tracks a more overtly song-driven focus than many club tool records. It emerged as a house subgenre and became closely associated with gay clubs during the latter half of the decade.

The music generally keeps house’s steady four-on-the-floor pulse, but builds drama through large vocal hooks, rising transitions and sharply placed piano chords. Synth accents fill out the arrangement, while breakdowns clear space for the singer or a familiar refrain before the beat returns. Compared with deeper or more stripped-back house styles, diva house puts the vocal performance at the centre: direct, expressive and designed to carry the track as much as the groove does.
